             Preventive Deworming

Fourteen percent (14%) of Americans are diagnosed with parasites each year.  Intestinal animal parasites can be transmitted to people causing major health issues.  To our pets, some risks may involve, blood loss, malnutrition, diarrhea, dehydration, weight loss and sometimes death.  How do worms harm people? Pets that are infected with certain worms contaminate their surroundings by passing eggs or larvae in their waste.  People get roundworm and hookworm infection through direct contact with infected feces. This makes infection possible through contaminated soil, sand or plant life. How many children play in the park or other places where pets are commonly taken?

FACT: In humans, roundworms cause tissue damage and can affect the nerves or even lodge in the eye, some cases cause permanent nerve eye damage, even blindness.

FACT: Hookworms penetrate the skin.  They can also penetrate into deeper tissues and cause serious damage to the intestine and other organs.

Early Detection of Illness is the Key to a Healthy Pet.
When our pets age, their bodys may develop some subtle changes that we are unable to observe.  The changes can be so gradual that even the most observant pet owner will not notice.
As our furry friends reach about 7 years of age and over, they are considered "senior pets".  In giant breed dogs, they may be considered seniors by age 4 years.  They can develop illnesses that a lot of humans can develop. This includes: diabetes, arthritis, cancer, cognitive dysfunction(senility), thyroid disease, kidney and liver diseases.   Most of the time, I realize that my clients do not notice that their pets are sick.  Often times your pets can hide their symptoms of illness very well and this makes it difficult for pet owners to see the subtle changes.  Most of my clients will tell me "he's just getting old, and that's why he has lost weight."

Here is a brief list of symptoms to look out for:

  • Diabetes ~ Drinking more water, urinating more, good appetite, dull coat, weight loss
  • Arthritis ~ Never cries in pain, but slower to go into the car and up stairs
  • Cancer ~ Sometimes no symptoms until the advanced stages
  • Kidney disease ~ Drinking more, eating less, weight loss, more urination
  • Liver disease ~ Weight loss
  • Cognitive dysfunction ~ Pacing, personality change
Early dection is the key to a happy and healthy pet.  Please visit us with your senior pets to have their annual senior physical exams.  We will discuss the foods that are more appropriate as your pet ages and a complete blood and urine check up will be performed. This, often times will diagnose diseases in its earlier stages.
We now offer GE Logiqbook ultrasonagraphy and Telemedicine.   This is one of the most advanced ultrasonagraphic tools now used in human and veterinary medicine.  It links us to specialists all over the country.  These specialists include: cardialogists, internists, avian/exotics specialists, radiologists.
We would like to offer you the opportunity to have your seniors pets checked thoroughly.  Please call us for appointments, questions or concerns.  (619) 441-5850.

What do I need to do when I adopt a new Pet?
Singing Hills Animal Hospital wants to give your new puppy or kitten a good head start.  When you adopt a kitten or puppy, you are begining a relationship that may last for decades to come.  Our veterinarians will provide your newly adopted four-legged friend his first physical exam for free. He/she will also be sent home with his/her first bag of premium food, recommend by the veterinarian.  A months flea and tick control medication will also be given to your pet.  Your veterinarian will help you decide between safe, nontoxic brand products best suited to your pet, such as: PROMERIS, FRONTLINE PLUS, or ADVANTIX. (altogether this is a $60-$70 value)
Most pet owners are not made aware what puppies and kittens need.  As responsible pet owners, we need to know what medical treatments pets need and when they need them in order to keep them healthy.
Kittens:
1) When first adopted, kittens must to be tested for feline leukemia and feline AIDS.  A young cat can bring these deadly viruses into the home and infect other cats.
2) Your kitty needs its first full physical exam once adopted to check for heart murmurs, determine its sex and age, discover a possible hernia, or other congenital defect.
3) Kittens are then started on a deworming program.  Kittens can carry worm eggs into the home that can infect other pets as well as people, especially children.
4) Core vaccines must be given in a timely fashion.  Vaccines are to be given at 8 weeks, 12 weeks, and 16 weeks.
5) Non-core vaccines will be given if you and your veterinarian determines that your kitten needs them.
6) Start a new kitten on a very high quality kitten food balanced in taurine and L-carnitine.
7) Spay or neuter early to prevent certain cancers.
Puppies:
1) Your puppy needs it's first full physical exam.  Your vet will discuss with you infectious diseases that are common to pups such as upper respiratory infections, kennel cough, parvo virus, and mange.  If your puppy came from a pet store or animal shelter, he/she may be incubating these disease.
2) Puppies are then started on a deworming program.  Puppies, like kittens can carry worms that infect people.
3) Core vaccines are given in a timely fashion.  Vaccines are to be given at 8 weeks, 12 weeks, and 16 weeks of age.
4) Non-core vaccines will be given if you and your veterinarian determine that your puppy's lifestyle will require them.
5) Start your puppy on a excellent puppy food.
6) Spay or neuter early to prevent certain cancers.

DOES YOUR DOG OR CAT HAVE ITCHY SKIN?  IT MAY NOT BE FLEAS THAT IS TO BLAME!!!

Does your dog lick his feet all the time?  Are his ears red and inflammed?  Does he rub his face on the carpet or lawn?  Is he always scratching.  If you see these common symptoms, don't blame it on the fleas.  Your dog probably has hayfever or "atopy".  Dogs and cats who live in southern California get hayfever just like people do.  Except they do not get the runny eyes, nose, and sneezing like us humans.  Dogs and cats itch, have ear infections, and lick the paws.  Atopy for pets, is usually worse in spring and summer when our allergies are at it's worst.  Come in and have our veterinarians give your pet a skin evaluation to determine if your pet in fact has allergies.  We will provide techniques on how to control the allergies and keep your pets comfortable.

Singing Hill's Animal Hospital, Inc. Welcomes Dr. Evelyn Tom

Hello everyone!  I am Evelyn Tom D.V.M. and I look forward to meeting you and working with your pets.  I am originally from San Diego.  I have spent 6 years practicing in a progressive veterinary practice in West Los Angeles.  My special areas of interest are soft tissue/orthopedic surgery, ultrasonography, and preventative medicine.  I received my degree at the Colorado State University School of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences.  Like many of you, I'm the proud parent of 5 pets.

As a veterinarian, my primary mission is to maintain your pets in great health and to make diagnoses accurately.  I believe it is important  prevent the onset of illness by having your pets examined annually.  I always say, "my patients never tell me where it hurts."  As pet owners and as your veterinarian, we must be very intuitive to your pets needs. They never complain.  They just give us lots of love and attention.  As you get to know me, you will realize that my style of veterinary practice is different than the usual.  I like to educate pet owners on common diseases so they can avoid them.  And if your pet is sick, I will discuss with you the disease process, different options in therapy, and prognoses. The pet owner is, therefore, very involved and knowledgeable on how their pet is being treated medically. We have a great staff.  I hope you will enjoy coming here as much as your pets do.

Evelyn Tom D.V.M.
